Powertrain/Steering

In order to bring the autonomy of the vehicle to life, the steering components and electrical subsystem will be heavily integrated together and function harmoniously. From the on board computer system, commands are sent to the drive motors of the steering subsystem, which power the wheels, enabling the vehicle to move. The diagram below illustrates how the electrical system ties into the powertrain and steering system to create a functioning vehicle.

Steering Mechanisms

Team Bowbot aims to implement the best steering mechanisms into our AEV in order to maximize the performance and functionality of the vehicle. We aspire to ultimately provide the best delivery services through our careful research and selection methods. Read more below on how our steering and powertrain mechanisms were chosen and how they help provide a better delivery service.

Rear Wheel Steering

Great Maneuverability

Traveling through sidewalks and ramps, the AEV must possess high maneuverability that allows the vehicle to traverse such complex paths. Team Bowbot's AEV will use rear wheel steering as its steering mechanism, where the two front tires are fixed in position and driven by the two rear tires. This steering mechanism provides great maneuverability and enables the vehicle to make tighter turns.

4 Wheel

Stable and Reliable

Carrying a parcel load of 300 lbs about campus, we want to ensure that all mechanisms chosen for the vehicle still provide the support required to bear such loads. The steering mechanism of the AEV will bear 4 wheels. The symmetry that a 4 wheel configuration provides allows for greater stability and load distribution, perfect for the purposes of Team Bowbot.

Dual-Motor

High Torque

Driving back and forth to pick up locations and delivery sites throughout the day, the AEV will need the best power system in order to maximize its performance and effectiveness. Powering the AEV are two motors attached to each of the two fixed front wheels. Utilizing the dual motor configuration offers high torque and better performance while using less power to drive the vehicle.
